Solver appears to make no progress, just cycle between steps

Hi all,

I have started using COMSOL 4.0, and I have been having a problem with the solver. When I hit compute, it will go into a cycle where the phrases "Assembling linear system", "Assembling sparsity patterns", "Matrix factorization", "Solving linear system" will keep cycling, while the progress bar does not move at all. I have run into this situation in two different problems. One is where I have a simple two-phase laminar flow problem. The other is a more complex problem with a single rectangle as the geometry where I have transport of dilute species (two species), laminar flow (no pressure difference, electroosmotic velocity BC), and electric currents. Some values are dependent on some values from other physics (like molar fluxes in the transport of dilute species depending on current density or the electric field for the electroosmotic velocity BC being defined from the ec physics). The model runs fine when I disable the first two and only run the electric current physics, but the solver goes nowhere when all three are being run.

Is the simulation actually running or is it doing nothing (or the same useless thing over and over). Does anyone have any ideas about what kind of mistake leads to this type of behavior and what kind of correction is needed?

Thanks!
Aytug
