How can I determine the fast axis and slow axis of a birefringent photonic crystal fiber in mode analysis ?

I am trying to perform mode analysis of a photonic crystal fiber (PCF), which basically gives the effective indices of the propagating modes.

As I get two polarized confined modes at 90 degrees with each other, is there any way to tell which one is the fast/slow axis mode by just looking at the modal effective index values ?
