Volume average in a sub-element

I have run a 3D liquid flow simulation and calculated the velocity distribution of a fluid in a domain. I would like to calculate the average velocity of the fluid in certain sub-elements and compare them. Currently, I can't select the desired sub-elements, and I would like to ask how I can do that.
When I create a "volume average" tab under results> derived values, I can only select the entire domain in the selection mode. I have tried creating geometry objects (blocks) where I would like the averaging to take place, however, they don't appear in the domain selection (whether they are defined as solid or surface).
Thank you in advance for your help!
