Polarization direction in 3D

I know that the direction of polarization should be defined when conducting piezoelectric energy harves.
In practice, however, the potential and displacement values were not adequate when the polarization direction was specified. Rather, the potential and displacement values were adequate when no polarization direction was specified.
I wonder why this is the case.
