[SOLVED] Comsol v4.3.0.233 crashes

Hi,

Today, after restarting my machine I opened several applications and I was logged out from my desktop session.

After checking one by one, I get to see it was comsol that was giving problems.
I've tested other Java based applications such as Matlab or Mathematica and don't had a problem.

Right now I have lots of applications opened without any problem, but I cannot open comsol v4.3.0.233 or I'll get logged out instantaneously.

Running scripts with Livelink v4.3.0.233 also crashes my session.
Creating, logging in and running comsol with a new user does not resolve the problem.

Comsol v4.2.0.150 seems to run fine.

Is it just me or there is somebody else who is getting logged out from session after running comsol v4.3.0.233?

Using:
Debian GNU/Linux 6.0
Kernel 2.6.32-5-amd64
gcc 4.4

Finally solved!

Since it take me 3 days of intensive work to find the source of the problem, I'm answering myself to leave at as a reference and if I can help anybody avoid the hard time.

After looking around in a hundreds of log files, I started suspecting about the nVidia drivers. I tried the old "glxgears" command and give me an error message.

After uninstalling the nVidia's proprietary drivers, Comsol runned fine with no problem at all.
Now I have installed the updated Nvidia drivers and everything seems to run smoothly.

I believe somehow I made an accidentally kernel update and that messed with the nvidia drivers.

Yes. This will routinely happen with Debian updating system because the proprietary nvidia drivers from the debian archive do not stay current with the latest binaries from nvidia. See updating nvidia drivers the "debian way" in several places on the net.

What I typically do is only use the latest stable releases from nvidia which does not involve the debian packaging system. When debian gets upgraded to include a required reboot due to kernel updates, then you must also manually reinstall the nvidia proprietary drivers.

You can also run comsol with the "-3drend sw" switch on the command line to avoid running 3D opengl, but it will manipulate the 3D images much slower.

Another option is to avoid the latest and greatest from nvidia, and only install nvidia proprietary packages from the debian packaging system. This is hard for me to do because I like to use the best nvidia drivers I can to make sure I have the best performance out of my hardware.

Thanks James for the advice.

That "-3drend sw" option seems a very easy way to check if comsol has been affected by a kernel upgrade.

Lets hope, in a not too far future, nVidia release their drivers to the open software community and we dont have to re-install drivers everytime there is a major kernel upgrade.
