Photonic crystal fiber - far field - numerical aperture

Please help me with my problem...
I am trying to model a photonic crystal fiber (geometry 2D - something like step-index fiber in model gallery) and have modelled the modes for given frequencies. Now I would like to see the far field for my fiber - the numerical aperture at least.
I have done some models adding the far-field computation but no good results. I have tried to make a very simple model in 2D axisymetric as a longitudial cut through the fibre and an air around (similar to geometry like 'diffraction patterns' in model gallery but with axisymmetry) but the results were not in agreement with simple calculations and what's more, so I can't model more complicated geometries which are not axisymmetric.
How can I do that?
Thank you
