Hexagonal Crystal (Sapphire) Wafer Orientation

Please login with a confirmed email address before reporting spam

Hello,

I am working with the solid mechanics module and I don't seem to understand the way Comsol treats a material with hexagonal crystal structure.

I have a simple 3D rectangular solid structure that has been cut from a Sapphire Wafer. Therefore, I defined the anisotropic material properties according to published data of sapphire which is in principle a hexagonal system. One side is aligned to the (10-10) direction of Sapphire while the out of plane direction is the c-axis (0001). How does comsol transform the crystal structure of my material to its cubic coordinate system. I thought I can use eulerian rotation (Defininitions--> Rotated Systems) but I don't think that is right because I guess it refers to the cartesian system.

I would be very pleased if anyone is willing to help me out and knows how to align a structure to an hexagonal coordinate system.

Thanks in advance,
Patrick
