Difference between 1 turn Multi-Turn Coil and Single Turn Coil

Hi all,

will there be any difference if i use Multi-Turn Coil with 1 turn or Single Turn Coil for a power cable conductor (copper)? Ideally there must not be any difference, however, I noticed that they give little different results when i evaluated Resistive Losses (252 W/m for Multi-Turn Coil with 1 turn and 257 W/m for Single Turn Coil). Therefore, Which one should i use?

are you working in 2D or 3D?

yes there is a difference. In a single turn coil the current density varies across the cross section whereas the
electric field is constant. For a multiturn coil is is the other way round.

In a DC application the difference in the magnetic field is often zero, but in AC you will see eddy currents in the single-turn coil but not for the multi-turn coil.

I suggest only to use multicoil domains when there are _many_ wires and when skin depth is larger than wire dimensions.

Thank you for your response, Jens. I am working in 2D. So for solid conductor I should use Single Turn Coil and for stranded one I have to use Multi Turn Coil?

Yes, but if the skin depth is smaller than the dimensions of a single strand you should also consider building many single turn coils. Which means extra work, but sometimes the difference matters. Good luck, Jens.
