Electrostatics non zero values

I have set up a parametric sweep across a range of initial voltages and have been trying to look mainly at how the electric field changes. I've been particularly looking to just see what alters from a base state with an applied voltage of zero. To this end I have used join to subtract the first solution of my parametric sweep from all the others.
The problem I've found is that when I look at the case with 0 volts applied I still see features. In the potential there are small variations on the order of 10 to the -11/-12 and then in the electric field I get strong enhancements of field near some metal components I have the model. Reducing the size of my mesh elements seemed to help to a point but I've found myself having reached the memory limit of my computer so am now stumped.
(Another thing I found was while trying to look at the electric field I put in the formula abs() so that I could just look at the magnitude and try and get a clearer look at things but I've been finding I still get negative values.)
I don't understand why I'm getting these when as far as I can tell I'm subtracting the same data set from itself. It may be case of a simple error or misunderstanding but any insight or assistance in how to solve this would be greatly appreciated.
