This is a comprehensive three-day training course aimed at individuals seeking to enhance their skills at Cable Modeling using COMSOL Multiphysics®.

Understanding the thermal and electromagnetic behavior of high voltage cables is key to their design. It is necessary to identify if the cable will exceed the maximum allowable temperature, predict safe loading currents and calculate the electromagnetic fields generated within and around the cables. As a multiphysics simulation package, COMSOL® allows these to be calculated while accounting for effects such as the skin depth and temperature dependent conductivites, ensuring accurate predictions.

The (Online) Cable Modeling in COMSOL Multiphysics® Course (3 Days) will develop the key skills needed to model cables in COMSOL Multiphysics® using the Heat Transfer and AC/DC modules. At the end of the course you will be confident in defining cable geometries, applying material properties, selecting the appropriate physics interfaces and study steps for the model, and extracting key outputs.

To teach this course, we use a combination of demonstrations, lectures and self-guided hands-on training.

Course Content

Day 1: Thermal Modeling of Cables

In the first day of the course, the thermal modeling of cables and their surroundings will be considered.

Session 1: 9:30 – 12:30

Topics include:

  • Defining cable geometries
  • Conductive heat transfer
  • Natural convection within housing tunnels
  • Thermal radiation

Hands-on Exercises: 14:00 - 16:00

Session 2: 16:00 – 16:30

Review of the material for day 1.

Day 2: Electromagnetic Modeling of Cables

In the second day of the course, modeling electromagnetic fields in and around cables will be considered.

Session 1: 9:30 - 12:30

Topics include:

  • Taking advantage of 2D modeling options
  • Capacitive effects
  • Inductive effects
  • Modeling solid and single point bonded cables
  • 3D cable models

Hands-on Exercises: 14:00 - 16:00

Session 2: 16:00 – 16:30

Review of the material for day 2.

Day 3: Advanced Cable Modeling

The final day of the course builds on the thermal and electromagnetic modeling skills developed in the first two days of the course to build more complicated cable models such as fully coupled thermal-electromagnetic cable models.

Session 1: 9:30 - 12:30

Topics include:

  • Electromagnetic heating in cables
  • Fully coupled thermal-electromagnetic models of cables
  • Identifying cable rating currents
  • Cross-bonded cables
  • Modeling phase and armor twist

Hands-on Exercises: 14:00 - 16:00

Session 2: 16:00 – 16:30

Review of the material for day 3.

Suggested Background

Basic understanding of thermal and low frequency electromagnetic physics, and familiarity with COMSOL Multiphysics® interface is recommended. We strongly recommend that those new to COMSOL® take the (Online) Introduction to COMSOL Multiphysics® (3 Days) Training Course prior to attending this course.

The fee for this 3-day course is £995 per person. We offer an academic discount to those who qualify. The academic rate for this course is £695. Course materials will be included.
