Multiphysics Fracture Mechanics with COMSOL Multiphysics® in 18 minutes - Archived
Crack propagation in solid structures is a problem that affects many industries, making development in the fracture mechanics field a topic of interest. The COMSOL Multiphysics software can be used to analyze crack propagation and develop solutions, including for cases involving hydrogen embrittlement. Hydrogen embrittlement can change the material behavior in metals from ductile to brittle, which can cause sudden structural failure. This problem is multiphysics in nature, and with COMSOL Multiphysics, engineers can solve for fracture mechanics as well hydrogen diffusion into a solid structure in one model, leading to a better understanding of the cracking.
In this webinar, we will highlight some of the new developments for fracture mechanics in COMSOL, including the Phase Field in Solids interface, which can be used to model crack propagation. There will be a demo that involves calculating the propagation of hydrogen embrittlement cracks.
