Optimization - Defeat reduction and control variable tolerance factors. What are they??

I'm currently working with the optimization module in COMSOL 5.2 on mac osx, using the built in parameter estimation step. I'm using the Levenberg-Marquardt solver with the numeric gradient method, although I believe these options are available for all gradient methods in this solver.

Under the optimization solver settings window, there are two options for which I have been unable to find any documentation:

Control variable tolerance factor (default=1)

Defect reduction tolerance factor (default = 0ff, toggle on default = 1)

I can't find any mention of these in the documentation. I examined the reference noted at the end of the Levenberg-Marquardt description in the documentation but wasn't able to find a clear description there either. I have some guesses for what the control var tolerance factor is, but I have no idea what defeat reduction is. Can you provide a description or reference for these settings? Or am I just missing something in the documentation? Thanks!
