triaxial test external stress and boundary load

I want to make a triaxial test for cylinder sandstone sample, The confining pressure is about 150MPa. In the solid mechanics mode, should I use external stress or boundary load for 150MPa? When I use boundary load, the mode is not symetrical in terms of strain or displacement of top and bottom. When I use the external stress, it can only works with lower confining stress,less than 10MPa.

So what is the different between external stress and boundary load?
