Identity Pairs and their usage

For the first time I have to use 'identity pairs' in 4.x due to geometrical requirements (I am not using the full contact surface between subdomains but partial). I have read about the way they are used and got a little confused with my simulation results.
In the dynamic help there is a statement goes like: "If required, click the Swap source and Destination button to swap the source boundaries and the destination boundaries"
Firstly, I have further searched the requirements for the condition to call a boundary a 'source' or a 'destination' boundary with no satisfactory results for the thermal case, yet again, switching source and destination boundaries has a considerable impact on my results. Do I have to perform solver adjustments if I use these pairs like in the case of 3.4? Where can I get more information on this?
Secondly, I couldn't find any explanation about what the requirement is for swapping. Does it have to do with imported geometries where the normal vectors of the surfaces are not aligned or in general is it related with surface normal vector direction?
Thanks in advance.
