Reduced field calculation

I do not fully understand the new option in COMSOL 4.2, where you can use a Reduced Vector Potential (RVP) for solving a 3D magnetic problem. In principle, the RVP calculates separately the contribution of the currents and the contribution of the iron to the magnetic field in the air. However, I do not see any difference in the modelling of COMSOL when you activate this option. I think that COMSOL should not mesh the coil volume (I mean, differently from the surrounding air) for the RVP formulation, because the currents are calculated analitically and not using the FEM problem. Can you help me with an explanation of this new option?
