PDE General Form convergence

Hi!!!
I'm working on a model that has some resembles with the Comsol's shock_tube sample. As I'm fairly new in Comsol I started my study by trying to understand the sample mentioned. In this study I've encountered convergence problems when using larger amplitudes in the step function used to simulate a discontinuity front (which will be a boundary condition).
Do you guys have any experience based technique to overcome this convergence issues, or any advice for that matter??

When using my model (which uses a different EoS from the sample), the convergence problem arise when trying to simulate my complete domain in the y axis. My ideia was to solve a series of PDE's where the initial values and mesh were the ones obtain from the solution of the previous PDE at maximum y. Is this a feasible solution. If so, how can I accomplish it?? Examples or manuals would be very appreciated.

Thanks for your attention.
