Illustrator--> COMSOL import?

Please login with a confirmed email address before reporting spam

Hello all:

I have a number of 2D geometries that I have created in Illustrator, which I would like to be able to import into COMSOL, and ultimately use in a 3D model. I have managed to get this to work, using some simple/meaningless geometries, via the following method, developed by a colleague:

1) Create Illustrator file
2) Export Illustrator file as .dxf
- seems to require that I export as (R13/LT95).
3) Import .dxf into 2D Comsol Model
- form solids
4) Export geometry as .mphbin file
5) Open 3D COMSOL model
6) Import .mphbin file into workpane
7) Extrude geometry

Now, this process seems to work OK, as long as I am trying to import a very simple 'practice' geometry. Once I begin working with my actual model geometry, which uses more complicated shape-making functions in Illustrator, the process breaks down. Specifically, at step 3 above, when I attempt to import my .dxf file, I continually get an error message indicating that the imported file "contains no geometries".

I can not find any specific things that I am doing differently, from a basic methods point of view, in my Illustrator work, other than making more curves to define more shapes. Filling shapes, vs. leaving them as un-filled outlines does not appear to have and effect, nor does anything else I can think to try. I have the import settings selected to create solids, and have tried adjusting the repair tolerance to no avail.

Does anyone have any ideas on what might be causing the problem?

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.

-Charles
