How to reduce the number of mesh elements in Laser (heat transfer) simulation

I would like to simulate the temperature field (3D) in a large plate resulting from a Laser beam following a Lissajous figure combined with a feed motion (see attached plot). I have already decided to model the Laser beam as a volume distributed heat source using the heat transfer application mode (ht).
The problem I am encountering at the moment and on which I would like to hear your suggestions, is the extreme difference in size between the Lissajous figure and the diameter of the beam. As I need a certain mesh density to resolve the heat source representing the Laser (at least 5 elements across the diameter of the Laser) I get an extremely high number of mesh elements when applying this mesh density to the whole area covered by the Lissajous figure, even for comparably small plates.
So my question to you is whether there are any more efficient ways of meshing the impact zone of the laser in order to reduce the number of mesh elements.
