Calculating wall shear stress

I have fluid flowing over a solid and I want to calculate the wall shear stress. I first calculated by multiplying the shear rate by the dynamic viscosity. But I would like to do it using the velocity gradient. How would I do it for a 3D model. I suppose spf.mu * (ux + uy + wz)?
