electric potential

I am doing simulation with Heat transfer module/Joule heating and I have a problem to define electric potential.
I applied a potential to a silver surface connected to one side of a carbon film, while the other side of the film connected to the ground by another silver surface. However, there was no difference in temperature means that may be the voltage is not applied to the carbon film!
Does any body has any idea?
