How to remove the waviness in MISES STRESS curve

Please login with a confirmed email address before reporting spam

Hi,

Recently I simulate an elastic-plastic model in solid mechanics module. When I get the mises stress curve, as shown in fig.Mises. I found there are many waves on the curve. How can I avoid this waviness?

I have tried high order shape function(cubic) and the waviness becomes less obvious. However, I cannot use much higher(like quartic) because of the convergence problem. So I want to know is there other ways to avoid this waviness? Thanks!

Best,
Rong

Hi,

This is a postprocessing artifact. There are two things you can do:

1. Specifically for stresses in structural mechanics: Plot results at Gauss points instead (solid.misesGp, for example).

2. Generally, in the Quality section of the result nodes (like Line Graph or Surface Plot), set Resolution to 'No Refinement'.

Henrik

Hi Henrik,

Thanks so much. It is very useful. Now the curves looks much smoother.
Through your way, I remove the refinement in postprocessing so that the Runge's phenomenon would not appear again. Thank!

Best,
Rong
