DBD modeling

For streamer modeling that is backbone of DBD modeling, I found two methods: ?
?1.?The electron, positive-ion and negative-ion continuity equations including ionization, attachment, ?recombination, photoionization and photoemission are solved simultaneously with Poisson's equation. ?There are many papers in this regard such as the attachment. ?

?2.?However COMSOL solves a pair of drift diffusion equations for the electron and electron energy density ?and a modified form of the Maxwell-Stefan equations for transport of the heavy species (non-electron ?species). ?

In comparing the above two methods there are the following points: ?
•First method does not use electron (non-electron) energy density equations.?
•There are some differences between continuity equations from first method and drift diffusion ?equations for the electron and transport equation of the heavy species from second method. The source ?term in second method does not include photoionization and photoemission and etc. ?

Now my questions:?
Is the second method (implemented in COMSOL) is more general than the first method? Is the two method are ?the same? How? (Please introduce some references that explain this analogy??
