Additive manufacturing is attracting more and more interest. Laser Cladding is one of these additive manufacturing processes. For this a quasi-stationary physical based 3D process model is presented, which has been developed taking into account heat transfer, melt pool fluid flow including surface tension effects (Marangoni convection) and free surface movement. Thereby the resulting surface contour of the process, the temperature field and the fluid flow velocity field can be simulated using the following COMSOL® modules: Heat Transfer, CFD, Mathematics and Moving Mesh. So especially the built height can be predicted and this can enhance the application of laser cladding.
