Why Removing Material Can Make Structures Stronger

Duration: 2:07

To increase the load-carrying capacity of a structure, one might think to simply add more material. That can certainly be the way to go in many cases, but sometimes, to make a structure stronger, it is actually better to remove material. In this video, we share three examples of when removing material adds strength: two that were guided by engineering intuition and one design produced via topology optimization.
