Heterogeneous Lithium-Ion Battery
Application ID: 33591
This model describes the behavior of a lithium-ion battery unit cell modeled using an idealized three-dimensional geometry. The geometry mimics the structural details in the porous electrodes. Such models are referred to as heterogeneous models.
The modeling approach for heterogeneous models differs from typical battery models, such as the Newman model. In homogeneous models, averaged properties such as volume fractions, specific surface area, and effective transport properties are used to describe the porous structure. In heterogeneous models, the geometry describes the actual shapes of the pore electrolyte and electrode particles.
The presentation associated with the model compares the results from the Newman model with the corresponding ones for the heterogeneous model. Discharge and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy simulations are compared.
This model example illustrates applications of this type that would nominally be built using the following products:
however, additional products may be required to completely define and model it. Furthermore, this example may also be defined and modeled using components from the following product combinations:
- COMSOL Multiphysics® and
- Battery Design Module and
- either the Geomechanics Module, or Nonlinear Structural Materials Module and
- either the MEMS Module, or Structural Mechanics Module
The combination of COMSOL® products required to model your application depends on several factors and may include boundary conditions, material properties, physics interfaces, and part libraries. Particular functionality may be common to several products. To determine the right combination of products for your modeling needs, review the Tabella delle Funzionalità and make use of a free evaluation license.
