Under-Deposit Corrosion
Application ID: 67821
In this model, the effect of corrosion product on galvanic corrosion between a magnesium alloy (AE44) and mild steel in contact with brine solution is presented, wherein deformed boundaries due to both deposition of corrosion product as well as dissolution of magnesium are considered.
The transport of Mg2+ ions generated at the magnesium surface and OH- ions generated at the mild steel surface and their precipitation reaction forming magnesium hydroxide corrosion product are modeled here using Transport of Diluted Species interface. The tracking of magnesium hydroxide corrosion product (Mg(OH)2) is modeled using the Level Set interface under Mathematics branch.
This model example illustrates applications of this type that would nominally be built using the following products:
however, additional products may be required to completely define and model it. Furthermore, this example may also be defined and modeled using components from the following product combinations:
- COMSOL Multiphysics® and
- either the Battery Design Module, Corrosion Module, or Electrodeposition Module and
- either the CFD Module, Corrosion Module, Electrodeposition Module, Microfluidics Module, Polymer Flow Module, or Porous Media Flow Module
The combination of COMSOL® products required to model your application depends on several factors and may include boundary conditions, material properties, physics interfaces, and part libraries. Particular functionality may be common to several products. To determine the right combination of products for your modeling needs, review the Tabella delle Funzionalità and make use of a free evaluation license.
